I have landpride's 6 foot model on a JD 970. It works well and does a good job.
The last job I did though resulted in a mutilated seed cup. I am not sure of the
cause of this and haven't looked at since. It will be a winter job. the seed cups
have been proven on the popular Great Plains drills and I suspect a lack of
maintenance on my part. I bought this in 1995, since then I noticed they changed
the flutes from plastic to powdered metal. Other than that I have planted about 40
acres of a combination of lawn, sunflower, wheat, rye, and pasture mix seed with no
problems. I looked at Brillion's and it seemed fine except the arms that the packer
axles mount on are cast iron, LP's is machined steel. I have seen a few old Brillion
pulverizers with broken cast iron endplates and CI does not weld very well.
After using the Landpride I have found the seed agitator to be inedaquate when the seed
level goes below it. Brillion's agitator seems like it would be more effective at that point.

I dont think you could go wrong either way.

The 970 is 3000# a loaded LP PS72 is about 1200# the tractor manages
it well with front weights but you dont want to seed with a loader on
because the weight will push the skinny front tires down and create a
tire track that removers on the seeder cant erase.

In that case Eric, You might consider having dealer install
the $71 part. It's been 5 years since but there was something
about the lower female part that needed to be done before threading
in new male part. It may have been just my carelessness, but the
threads ended up cross threading and caused a failure under a load.

Just a minute as I remove the treble hook....Ok let's dance.

If I am being allowed to use any model of John Deere I wish to
compare to a nh tc40d, It would not be one which is 428lbs. lighter
but one which is 122lbs. heavier. Nor would I use a 4400 which holds
2 gallons less of fuel but a 4500 which holds 1/2 gallon less.

R-4 front tire size ...4" diameter difference??? Aw shucks that's
practically the same.

nh tc40d=121.7 c.i.d. 4 banger
JD4500=121.7 C.I.D. 4 Banger
hhmmmm...

Ah hah! Pumps you say? 4400 has a 8.6gpm main, 4500 has a 9.9 and
guess what?........nh tc40d has a 9.8gpm main.

Confined in the 4400? No wonder! It's a smaller tractor!

Yes, that does sound like a good deal, especially if it is 4wd.
Dont be fooled by "routine maintenance" unless the seller is your mom.
If it is only 2wd you might be dissappointed with performance depending
on what you would like to do with it.

A dealer would want at least $9000 for same tractor.

don't go more than $500 on mmm if it is apparently used.

Signs of abuse on this tractor are bent footsteps, dinged front driveshaft
guard,sloppy loader attachment points, bent-up bucket, and bent rims....my
tractor has all of these :)

IMO you should

1. talk to accountant about depletion

2. buy a bobcat

3. put drain tile in your fields

4. work at a nursery if you havent already

5. load trees with forks

6. If you gotta put a spade on compact put on 3pt.
and operate with a short 1000lb counterweight on front w/o
loader. A 3000lb 4wd compact should handle a 24" spade

Call Greenias in Almont, they had one with R-4's about a month ago, dont know the price or if it is still there.

Saw one at Laetham equipment in Caro in march. for $20k. If your heart is set on this tractor dont hesitate too long I dont believe they are making them anymore.

If the optional Rear light runs more than $50 put it on yourself.

have them put rim-gard in tires and also put rear tires on widest setting

Norm you are correct, if the roots are wrapped around the tiller shaft they are not in the ground anymore, which was the task at hand.

when I cleared roots off mine the best way was to cut with a sharp, sturdy carpenters knife.

A few years ago while working up my parents garden I found an old steel tool handle wrapped around twice comparable to 3/4 inch EMT but with 3 times the wall thickness, that took a sawzall to remove.

Switching tow vehicles and old hydraulic activated plumbing doesn't fit. How do you guys like inertia activated electric brake controllers? I heard they activate when backing up on rough terrain. Is this true and is it a big deal? And what brand is best? Tekonsha? Kelsy-hayes? thanks

Sounds like you have wrong top link for tractor. Do other 3pt implements fit well?

top links for the most part are universal (except for category and length) and can be found at any farm supply store (TSC, Quality stores) and other multibrand new and used tractor dealers will have them.

I saw one fella buy alot of them and keep them on implements. that way its always adjusted to that implement. And before somebody got the idea to put a hook on the tractor they got bang around when not in use.

a suggestion or two: make sure you recieve the tractor with rear wheels set to the widest spacing possible call them now before they assemble at dealer (70 series tractors used to be crated to the dealer, maybe not any more). and consider rear ballast liquid if you havent yet. have fun

---I have not seen any after 8-9 years of owning a 970. I have 13.6-24 r-1 tires on the back and have cleared 3 out of 3 standard garage doors by .5 inch.

---I doubt any company would want to take on liability issues that come with defeating such an important safety feature.

---I hot wired my seat switch so I can run the PTO powered backhoe but have decided to put in a switch at that connection to restore the safety feature when hoe is not attached because ya never know!

---If that feature is needed, I think your best bet is to find a confident welder and have it fabricated.

cutter, I am sure you already thought about this, but be thankful you did not put radient heating tubes in that slab and if you had the tubes be thankful the problem is 3-4 feet from the edge!
